Axiom Space and Prada have partnered to develop the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit for NASA's Artemis III mission, aiming to return humans to the lunar surface by 2026.

I was honored to be selected as the designer for the graphical display interface located on the suit's wrist. This display will provide astronauts with vital information, including suit health status and critical mission data, ensuring functionality and ease of use in extreme conditions.

I had the privilege of working closely with astronaut Peggy Whitson (pictured above), who holds the record for the most spacewalks by a woman.

*Due to the proprietary nature of my work, I can only showcase selected snippets of my design process.

Please note that these designs differ from the final delivered versions.

Characteristics of the UI/UX Design:

  • Mission Timeline

Very strict guidelines were provided for each screen, along with numerous constraints regarding color and screen resolution. Most of my effort focused on designing an intuitive user experience for each.

  • Map

Because of poor lighting conditions in the shaded regions of the moon, astronauts will rely on this device to view the map and follow directions.

  • Telemetry

Astronauts will be able to view all telemetry relevant to the health status of their suit and their overall well-being. This data will be presented in various forms of charts and graphs.

  • Camera

For research purposes, the device will be able to capture and transmit pictures to Ground, whether it’s detailed images of samples, equipment, surrounding terrain, or even documentation of experiments conducted on-site.

  • Procedures

Astronauts will read procedures directly from the screens, so each step must be clearly displayed with fonts large enough for easy legibility. The size and limitations of the helmet were carefully considered in these design decisions.
